AFCA case support

Factual research, document chronology and public-source evidence for complaints before the Australian Financial Complaints Authority.

The Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA) is the free, independent external dispute resolution scheme for consumers and small businesses. It can consider complaints about banks and credit providers, general and life insurers, and superannuation trustees — including insurance held inside super.

Melbourne Detective does not decide AFCA complaints and is not a substitute for AFCA or a court. We prepare lawful factual material that clients and instructing solicitors can use in internal dispute resolution, at AFCA, or when assessing litigation.

Banking and payments

Deposit accounts, internet banking, ATM and branch transactions, transfers, unauthorised transactions, mistaken payments and related privacy issues. Work includes transaction chronologies, counterparties on disputed transfers, and source-linked files for scam or impersonation complaints.

Insurance

Claim denial or reduction, delay, alleged non-disclosure, assessed loss and premium issues. AFCA does not consider private health insurance. Factual work covers event reconstruction, contemporaneous records, witness location and a clean document index. Surveillance is used only when properly instructed and proportionate.

Superannuation

Super complaints follow special rules and generally have no monetary compensation cap. Typical files: death benefits, TPD and income protection held through super, insurance inside the fund, and trustee decision paths. Complaints about insurance in super are usually lodged against the trustee first; AFCA may join the insurer.

How AFCA generally works

  1. Complain to the firm first (IDR) and keep the reference.
  2. Lodge with AFCA at afca.org.au or call 1800 931 678 if unresolved.
  3. AFCA refers the complaint back to the firm, then may use negotiation, conciliation or a determination.

Claim limits and time limits change. Confirm the current AFCA Rules before relying on any figure. Do not delay lodgement while evidence is collected.
